What is Child-resistant packaging?

Child-resistant packaging (CR packaging) is designed to prevent children from accidentally ingesting harmful substances. This is typically achieved using special safety caps. Regulations require CR packaging for prescription and over-the-counter medications, nicotine-containing e-cigarette devices and refills, certain pesticides, and household chemicals. In some areas, even blister packs are regulated for child safety.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that “There is no such thing as child-proof packaging. So you shouldn’t think of packaging as your primary line of defense. Rather, you should think of packaging, even child-resistant packaging, as your last line of defense.”

How to Open Child-Resistant Tins?


Child-resistant tins protect kids from dangerous content. Not to worry! Opening them is easy once you know how. A brief guide:

Step 1: Check Tin

Please ensure you examine your child-resistant tin first. Most locks have specific features. A lid must be pushed down while spinning or a tab pulled up while twisting.

Step 2: Find the Release Mechanism

Check lids for little arrows or notches. These often signify release locations. Sometimes you must press hard on these locations.

Step 3: Press and Turn

Put your fingertips where the arrows point on the lid. Turn the lid counterclockwise while pressing down hard with your thumb. Imagine rotating a lock key with increased pressure.

In Step 4, pull up if needed.

After rotating, some tins require pulling up the lid. Pull gently. Push down and spin again if it doesn’t open.

Remember, these tins are difficult for young hands but easy for grownups. Take your time and follow these procedures to open it quickly!
